COWBOYILY by
Steven Cole Hughes
(Runs August 30 –
September 15)
When Will arrives
in Denver, his plans are simple: write a play, return home to Chicago. Then his
bus crashes, and the events that follow are anything but simple. His bus
driver, Travis, ends up hospitalized-but not before he steals Will's writing
journal. As Will tries in vain to convince Travis to return his precious journal,
he realizes that this gritty bus driver could give him the raw material for the
best play of his career. Sensing Will's desperation, Travis grudgingly agrees
to talk with him more, in exchange for free meals and drinks, of course. In
their conversations, however, mutual suspicion turns to defiance, and the
outcome leaves us all questioning what being "civilized" really
means.
“A
consistently funny yet incisive examination of the tenuous distinction between
racism and classism in America. - John Moore, Denver Post
FATAL
ATTRACTION: A Greek Tragedy
(Runs November 1
– November 17)
When a big-time
corporate lawyer has a one-night stand with a no-nonsense business woman, all
hell breaks loose. A cut-up parody of the 1987 film, this play is a hilarious
send-up that includes plenty of Kung-Fu action, a Greek chorus, big hair and
maybe even a boiled bunny. This play will “not be ignored!”
SYMPHONY FOR
THREE by Mike Smith
(Runs February 14
– March 1)
A play about
love, genius and madness. Robert, a composer, is married to Clara, a
novelist. They befriend Johannes a graduate student who becomes a
folk-singer and then rock star. The tragic triangle is set against a 1960s
backdrop of The Beatles, Vietnam and the hope that the world could be better.
THE LIQUID
MOON by John Green
(Runs March 27 –
April 12)
Is it a mid-life
crisis? Is his marriage on the rocks? If you have an intimate, non-sexual
relationship with another woman, are you really cheating on your wife? Ryan, a
married, middle-aged writer, seeks the counsel of his conservative, life long
friend, Paul, in order to make sense of his life. He has been seeing another
woman, but they have agreed that their relationship is to be strictly platonic.
Can it stay that way? What will happen when they see each other tonight?
Nothing is predictable in this sophisticated look at sex, love and
relationships. This production contains adult content and nudity.
“A lovely and
moving drama that dares to take morality to task without relinquishing high
standards of human behavior.” Lucia Mauro, Critic - Chicago Sun Times
WORK by Terri Wagener
(Runs May 8 – May
24)
The Bloomington Playwrights Project
proudly announces the winner of this season’s Reva Shiner National Full-Length Playwriting Contest:
Work by Terri Wagener. Work by Terri Wagener is the story of a recently-widowed African American
woman who receives an unexpected guest: an executive of her husband’s employer has just arrived with
a widow’s compensation check. What should be a routine delivery of a tragic gift becomes a reality
trip into the harsh social climate of the late 1960s, cleverly echoing our contemporary experience.
The Reva Shiner Contest is one of the few full-length play contests in the nation that awards the
winner not only with a cash prize, but also a full production of the winning play. Work is directed
by Dr. James Mumford and stars Breshaun Joyner and Jeffrey Craft.
