Youth Musical Theater Ensemble (YMTE)

The Youth Musical Theatre Ensemble (YMTE) program is a summer camp geared toward youth ages 11 - 17 who have a passion for the stage.  Each year the Bloomington Playwrights Project (BPP) selects an exciting musical for students to produce throughout the duration of the camp.  Over the course of this four week day camp, students will learn the skills needed to produce and perform musical theatre, culminating in a series of full performances for the general public.

We are pleased to announce that the 2011 Youth Musical Theatre Ensemble will be performing Zombie Prom by John Dempsey, with music by Dana P. Rowe.

This girl loves ghoul rock and roll Off Broadway musical is set in the atomic 1950s at Enrico Fermi High, where the law is laid down by a zany, tyrannical principal. Pretty senior Toffee has fallen for the class bad boy. Family pressure forces her to end the romance, and he charges off on his motorcycle to the nuclear waste dump. He returns glowing and determined to reclaim Toffee's heart. He still wants to graduate, but most of all he wants to take Toffee to the prom. The principal orders him to drop dead while a scandal reporter seizes on him as the freak du jour. History comes to his rescue while a tuneful selection of original songs in the style of 50s hits keeps the action rocking across the stage.

Celebrating an amazing eleven years of theatre outreach, the Youth Musical Theatre Ensemble provides Bloomington's teens and 'tweens with an intensive, four-week, summer stock experience. A rigorous rehearsal schedule, collaboration with theatre professionals, and a special mid-camp cabaret night give YMTE members an exciting window into the demands and rewards of a life in theatre.
